When Anne and Julian walked into the breakfast room the next morning

it was to find that Thomas Craven had already preceded them. He was

involved in a lively conversation with Prue Gibson, who was sparkling even

more than usual under Craven's gentlemanly charm.

"Good morning, you two," Prue called out cheerfully, pouring coffee into

two cups. "How did you sleep last night? That was quite a storm we had,

wasn't it? I was just telling Thomas here that legend has it little Carlota

was trying to make her escape on a night like last night."

"I've never quite understood why ghosts and storms go together,"

Thomas said genially as he sat back and sipped his coffee. "But there is a

definite correlation. In many of the cases I've investigated the presences

are felt most strongly during a severe storm. It will be interesting to see if

Sara experienced any emanations last night."

"I expect ghosts and storms go together because people's imaginations

seem to become more vivid under stormy conditions," Julian remarked

coolly as he handed a cup of coffee to Anne and then helped himself.

"You sound like a skeptic, Julian." Thomas Craven smiled blandly. "Only

to be expected. Most people are until they've actually experienced a

presence or witnessed the results of one passing through. I myself used to

scoff at the idea of ghosts, but in my line of work you quickly become

convinced. I set out to disprove the legends and tales I had been collecting

and found myself unable to ignore the evidence. But I still maintain a

scientific approach to the matter, and in many of the cases I'm called in to

investigate I wind up proving there is no presence. In other cases my

friends and I have been able to provide tranquillity to homes that have

been troubled."

Julian shrugged with evident disinterest. "Well, it's Miss Creswell's

money. If Anne's aunt wants to pay you to de-ghost her house that's her

business."

"Still," Dan Hargraves remarked from the doorway, "it must be a little

galling for a man who is currently unemployed to see money being spent

in such a frivolous fashion. Then again, I suppose you can afford to take

the long-term view. After all, you're going to be marrying one of Miss

Creswell's heirs, aren't you?"

The silence that followed the provocative insult was broken only by the

sound of Anne choking on her coffee. She couldn't believe Dan had had the

nerve to offer such a challenge to Julian Aries, even if he truly believed

that Julian's motives were questionable. Dan had no way of knowing that

the whole engagement was a farce, of course. He was reacting to the

situation that had been presented, and Anne could only assume he was

deliberately insulting Julian for a reason. She just couldn't imagine what

the reason would be.

Neither, apparently, could anyone else in the room. Even Prue was

momentarily silenced in astonishment. Craven looked pained. Anne was

struggling to find words with which to smooth over the situation when

Julian spoke.

He regarded Dan with laconic boredom, as if the younger man was a

rather annoying rodent that had wandered into the house. "You can skip

the not-so-subtle insults, Hargraves. Anne and I understand each other

very well.
